Final Report : executive
summary |
1. Some Facts
- the lumber line is one of the most important parts of the economy in Salzburg
- rising competition of Eastern-european and Scandinavian countries
- our drawback: we mainly produce roundwood and cannot compete with lower prices
Hence the Techno-Z Salzburg proposed the project InfoWood Salzburg to raise the competitiveness of the lumber line by creating an added value to products made by wood. A means to achieve this goal is the usage of IT. This will lead to more co-operations and furthermore to a better dissemination of know-how.
2. Objectives
- Sensitising the lumber business on the topic "Co-operations by means of IT"
- Initialising co-operations not only between enterprises but also between science and economy
3. Project content
- Project management
- Demonstration of technological and co-operative possibilities
- Gaining information on the actual role of IT in the lumber business as well as problems and suggestions
- Determination of further IT-topics
- Implementation including the pilot "VHU"
- Results and dissemination
Our services will be press releases, lectures, workshops and the virtual lumber enterprise (pilot).
4. European dimension and benefits
- Dissemination of our results by the umbrella structure and through integration with the Info-Web of the APTA (Austrian Platform for Telematic Applications)
- creation of an e-mail service or a newsgroup as a platform to discuss topics relevant to the lumber business.
Basically we want to show European enterprises in the lumber line that many of their problems can be solved by intelligent usage of IT. They shall see that it is easier to co-operate with other enterprises by means of IT and that such partnerships would put them in the position to better cope with their problems. We consider it very difficult to determine or estimate the European benefit in precise figures, but we are absolutely convinced that InfoWood Salzburg will contribute to the strength of the European lumber business in times of globalisation.
Furthermore our partner the Holztechnikum Kuchl will integrate the results in its courses of instruction. In a last step it will do an intense exchange of know-how with its European partners (i.e. the Universities of Munich and Karlsruhe, the Fachhochschule of Rosenheim etc.) concerning the beneficiary aspects of IT.
